We completed a large-scale glass balustrade installation at Thomas More College in Pietermaritzburg, designed to meet both visual and health and safety requirements for a busy school environment.
The project covered approximately 47 metres along the front of the hockey field stadium seating, as well as sections along stair access routes. The solution needed to provide a secure barrier while maintaining clear visibility across the field.
The balustrade system had to deliver on two key priorities. Firstly, it needed to meet strict safety requirements for elevated seating and stairways. Secondly, it had to maintain an open, unobstructed view for spectators.
In addition, the installation had to withstand outdoor conditions, including exposure to weather, while being completed within a tight project timeframe.
We designed and installed a custom glass balustrade system using galvanised fabricated steel set within a U-channel. This provided a strong, weather-resistant base for the installation.
Each glass panel was positioned vertically within the channel. We then used non-shrink grout to secure the panels, ensuring a stable and durable finish suitable for long-term use.
The project was delivered over five days, with careful planning required to manage both installation and curing time.
We completed the groundwork and positioning in stages to ensure everything was aligned and ready for the glass installation. Once the glass panels were set into the galvanised U-channel, we secured them using non-shrink grout.
Because the grout required approximately 12 hours to cure, we scheduled this work to take place overnight. This allowed the system to set properly without delaying the overall project.
Following curing, we returned to complete the installation, carry out final adjustments, perform quality checks and clean the glass panels to achieve a professional finish.
The finished installation provides a clean, modern glass balustrade that meets all safety requirements while preserving clear sightlines across the hockey field.
The system is durable, weather-resistant and designed for long-term performance in a high-use environment. The project was delivered on time, and the client was extremely satisfied with both the process and the final result.
Glass balustrades offer a practical combination of safety, durability and modern design, making them a reliable choice for both commercial and residential projects.
Did you know? Safety glass is up to 5x stronger than standard glass”
Maximise visibility and safety
Glass balustrades provide a secure barrier without blocking sightlines. This is especially important in environments like schools, stadiums and public spaces where clear visibility supports both supervision and safety.
Compliant with safety standards
Toughened and laminated safety glass used in balustrades is designed to meet building and safety regulations, including impact resistance and load requirements. In South Africa, installations typically align with SANS building standards, ensuring safe use in high-traffic environments.
Durable in outdoor and coastal conditions
Glass combined with galvanised or stainless steel systems performs well in harsh environments. Unlike traditional materials, it does not warp, rot or corrode easily, making it ideal for outdoor use across South African climates.
Low maintenance and long lifespan
Glass balustrades require minimal upkeep compared to wood or painted steel. Regular cleaning is usually sufficient, reducing long-term maintenance costs.
Enhances property value and aesthetics
Modern glass installations are widely associated with high-end design. Studies in property and construction sectors consistently show that clean, contemporary finishes improve perceived property value and visual appeal.
Improves light and space perception
Glass allows natural light to pass through, making spaces feel more open and less confined. This is particularly valuable in seating areas, staircases and balconies.
Strong and impact-resistant
Safety glass used in balustrades is engineered to withstand significant force. Laminated glass, in particular, holds together even if damaged, reducing risk of injury.
